Steven BosilJevac is a partner at Pricewaterhouse Coopers. (Billabong Financial Report, 2013: 43) Answer 8 DEPRECIATION Land and building are shown at cost. Consecutive prices are encompassed in the assets carrying number or recognised as a distinct asset, as appropriate, merely after it is probable that upcoming commercial benefits associated alongside the item will flow to the group and the price of the item can be measured reliably. All repairs and maintenance are charged to the income statement across the commercial era in that they are incurred. Accumulated depreciation Buildings 20-40 years Owned and leased plant and equipment 3-20 years Furniture, fittings and equipment 3-20 years Land has not been depreciated. Building, plant and equipment and furniture, fittings and equipment have been depreciated using the straight-line method. This method has been used to allocate the assets cost net of their residual values and over the period of their estimated useful lives. Total depreciation as of June 2013 stands at $34,866. Depreciation on building is $1,520, on plant and equipment is $31,919 and Plant and equipment under finance lease is $ 1,427. This onsists of borrowings, deferred tax liabilities, provisions and other non-current liabilities. Borrowings account for the largest portion of the long-term liabilities. The total amount under borrowings sums up to $205,942. Other non- current liabilities liabilities have decreased from the financial year 2012 to the year 2013. (Billabong Financial Report, 2013) Answer 12 Current Ratio Current ratio is mainly concerned with a firms current assets and current liabilities. Current assets are those assets in a firms balance sheet that can be easily converted into cash within a short time frame. Eg. Accounts receivable. Current liabilities are those liabilities that are to be cleared within the time span of a year. Eg. Accounts payable. Current Ratio determines whether a firm has the ability to pay off its current liabilities. A ratio of 1:1 shows that current liabilities can be paid off using all of the current assets of the firm. A ratio higher than 1:1 shows that liabilities can be paid off without using all of the Current Assets. Whereas, a ratio less than 1:1 implies that the current assets of the firm are not enough to clear current liabilities. Current Ratio = Current assets / Current liabilities Billabongs Current Ratio : Current Asset/ Current Liabilities = 289,853/ 258,609 = 1. 12 : 1 Billabong International Limited has a current ratio of 1. 12 : 1. This indicates that Billabong will be able to clear its current liabilities using the current assets. However, this ratio also indicates that after clearing the current liabilities, Billabong will not be left with an adulatory amount of current assets. Economic Development amid the Non (or Semi) Democratic political Term Paper

Economic Development amid the Non (or Semi) Democratic political institutions in Southeast Asia - Term Paper Example There are reports claiming that during the 2008 referendum which concurred with the cyclone Nargis, victims of the cyclone in the cyclone-affected areas were forced to vote ‘yes’ for the national referendum. The Union of Solidarity and Development Association (USDA) which is a non-military/civilian wing of the dictatorship threatened to cut relief supplies or inflict violence to anyone who voted against the proposed constitution. The new constitution was thus supported and enacted with 92.48% of the voters endorsing it. This indicates that despite the presence of opposition, total democracy was far from reach in Burma because these democrats were not likely to win the elections and referendums. These activities were oppressed and controlled by the nondemocratic military regime. Apart from inhuman treatment of the people, there was also a violation of the right of freedom of speech by the military regime. Burma citizens had little power to critic and correct the militaris ed nondemocratic political regime. Zarnagar, a comedian and a dissident was arrested for criticising the ruling generals in public for their sluggish and inadequate response to the cyclone Nargis. He was charged with offences of public order and his computer and many banned films were seized by secret police. When human conditions worsened because of the unmerited fuel price increase in 2007 in Burma, Charles Petrie, the United Nations Burma country chief, issued a statement on UN Day concerning the worsening humanitarian crisis in Burma. Because of this, he was expelled. Generally, the militarised nondemocratic government reinforced its rule by making use of pervasive security apparatus with Directorate of Defense Services Intelligence (DDSI), the military intelligence organization... The intention of this study is Burma as an example of how the economy of a nation can suffer because of poor leadership styles. For about half a century, the country has been under a militarized nondemocratic government which has grown to become more and more oppressive over time. the country has witnessed one of the worst violations of human rights because of a bad political regime. In efforts to maintain thumb of rule in the country the regime formulated poor and unattractive economic policies which have discouraged both local and foreign investment in the country. The land policies have acted as disincentives for the people to undertake land development and this has retarded the competitiveness of the nation’s agriculture. There are many and powerful global examples of highly developed nations that are ruled by democratic civilian governments. The US, UK, Canada, South Africa are just but a mention. This means that there are hopes that the end of the nondemocratic militari zed regime will bring Burma back on the road to development. Economic development is an important prerequisite for greater stability, prosperity, equality, stability, and better livelihoods. With the recent advent of the new Burma’s civilian, democratic government, it is of due significance that the international community should help direct the new Burma’s government into achieving economic developments that are sustainable. This will be very instrumental in ensuring that the repressed people of Burma receive the right food, education, health, security and happiness they deserve.

Research In Human Relations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Research In Human Relations - Essay Example Let us now define research through its characteristics. Research begins with a problem or a question followed by the setting of goals and devising of a method or specific plan. The main problem is expounded by a hypothesis and assumptions regarding the cause or possible solutions are accepted as part of the research process. Research is not only about data gathering, but it is likewise concerned with the interpretation of data as a means to arrive at a solution to the problem or an answer to the main question (Andersen). There are four basic research design elements. These elements include treatments, measures, time and groups or individual. We shall focus on the time element for the purposes of this paper. Time is very important as it determines the degree and quality of observed changes. There are two classifications of research design under the time element: cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. A cross-sectional study is carried out at one instance, while a longitudinal study occurs over a period of time with a series of measurements (Trochim, 2006). A cross-sectional study includes observation of diverse groups of people of various age levels or a cross-section of a population. A longitudinal study involves observing and gathering information from the same group of people over a period of time. The focus of cross-sectional studies is on the differences between groups at a certain point in time, while the focus of longitudinal studies is on individual change over an extended period of time (A Research Typology, 2004). Since a cross-sectional study is done at only one instance, the expenses and time needed to gather data are very minimal. This is an advantage of the cross-sectional strategy. It is more convenient for both the participants and the researcher because there is only one period for data gathering (King, 2001). The participants need not go back for other sessions and researchers do not need to maintain contact with participants and sustain a budget for data collection over a long period of time. Another advantage is the large amount of diverse data that can be collected at one time. This data is very useful to the researcher in the immediate analysis and solution of a problem, and may also be very helpful to other researchers searching for similar data. A major di sadvantage though of this strategy is its failure to measure the actual individual changes that will occur or may inevitably be experienced by the subjects. It is a static representation of the variables and causes and effects cannot be measure accurately. In attitudinal or perception studies more often used in Psychology, a cross-sectional study is not dependable because many factors may affect the disposition or attitude of a person at a given time. Personal problems or emotionally disturbance experienced by subjects very close to the data gathering session may affect their responses. The elimination of outside factors can be done through a longitudinal study where subjects are contacted at different periods where their experiences and personal dispositions are varied. The main advantage of a longitudinal study is its ability to determine actual changes and trends that happen over a vast interval of time because it documents information from each subject at specific age levels and records comparisons between subjects across different timelines. Patterns of changes and causes of

Fulfilling our Potential Essay Example for Free

Fulfilling our Potential Essay The different Definitions of education are misinterpreted in different ways, but there are still ways that you can interpret what you think the definition is on education. Education is to be able to find your own path. To have a high school diploma or to have a college degree, education is to be successful in your life in whatever way that is. Trying to define education is like trying to define why the sky is the color it is or why the grass is green, there is no accurate definition of education to me. Education can mean more than one thing having a college degree but also can mean not having a college degree. Being educated to me means to be successful in your life, just because you do not have a college degree doesn’t mean you will not go far in your life or make a good amount of money. People make it seem as if you don’t have a decent degree you will just work at a fast food restaurant. If someone were to ask me what it meant to be educated I wouldn’t be able to give them an answer. My mother Julie, went to the University Of Arkansas were she had completed law school. After completing law school she got a job at JB Hunt being a contract attorney. My father Carlos, who only has a high school diploma but works for a company called South Western Energy and is a company man for two rigs out in Pennsylvania where he is very successful in what he does. I don’t think you have to have a college diploma to be the most educated person around. Do I think you would make more amount of money in certain professions? Yes. Society makes it out to be that you must be admitted to a college to be educated, but really how educated do you have to be, to be admitted into a college. Back in the day it was a lot harder to get into a college, now-a-days you can score a fourteen through a sixteen and easily get into a college and just have to do remediation classes. Being tested for an ACT, SAT, Standardized test to me doesn’t show how educated you really are. Teachers teach you for the chapter they are covering than they either expect you to continue to remember what they taught you or you forget it. On the standardized test or the A T or SAT there is information that you were taught in younger grades or that you haven’t been taught yet. So technically it really isn’t showing how educated a person may really be. Life its self-offers you an education. This lesson of education is more a hard learning education. ‘The best way to predict your future is to create It.’- Abraham Lincoln. You are not taught in school how to balance a check book, how to cook, how to pay taxes, or how to do major things in the real world. Sooner or later you will get to the point that you will graduate for high school, get your GED or even drop out, but there will come a time that you will leave your parents’ house, which then you will have to find your own path in the real world. Unless you were taught by your parents or other adults how to balance a check book, how to cook, how to pay taxes, or how to do things in the real world you won’t be an educated person on how to go about life. In life there will be times that you will come to points in life that will you will see how educated you are, or when there is times that you need to speak up or when you need to go ahead and back off from the situation. People are different and learn in many different ways some faster than others and some who remember everything easily or some who forget stuff by the time class is over. Being knowledgeable in one subject and not in the other is that consider too make someone less knowledgeable or less comprehensive than another person. When going through college to earn a degree depending on what we want to major in we aren’t taught certain subjects. When majoring in anything in the medical field you aren’t taught any type of histories because you don’t need to know it. When you want to become a history major you aren’t taught any sciences because you don’t and won’t need them. If someone was to walk up to someone and try and have a conversation with them about a certain subject or ask them for some type of help on a certain subject but the other person isn’t able to have a conversation back because they aren’t taught that subject or haven’t been taught that subject does that make them any less educated than the person asking for help. There will always be some one that is always smarter or believes to be smarter than you, but really how can you tell how smart someone is. Being successful to me is a huge part of being educated. When knowing people who have a good degree and do not do anything with their degree and make bad choices in their life and not care what anyone thinks isn’t a successful and well educated person. When you are living on the streets and have a good degree you could go and find a job even if it means starting at a fast food restaurant and working your way to the top to get a job for what your degree is. It may take time but no reason to just sit around and waste a well-educated mind as society would say. There may be as many definitions as there are defines, but it is important for people to have a clear understand of education in order to be able to define it to other people on what your beliefs are and what it means to be a well-educated person. â€Å"There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread† – Charles Dickens, Oliver Twist World hunger is one of the biggest problems faced in this world today. About 24,000 people die every day, and most of these deaths are faced by children under five. Even though there is a lot of food in the world, some people in the world can’t access these foods because of poverty. About 1/10 of the world population suffer from chronic hunger every year. Because of the hunger problem, the majority of people suffer from blindness, anemia, malnutrition related problems and other diseases because they are not getting enough diet. There are lots of countries facing hunger issues in the world. Most of the hungry countries are undeveloped countries and some developing countries. Some of the hungry countries are, D.R. Congo, Somalia, Burundi, Eritrea, Mozambique, Zambia, Haiti, Sierra Leone, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan. Most of the hungry countries are located in Africa. Out of all these countries Somalia is hungriest country in Africa, and followed by Haiti in Central America. The main reason why there are lots of hunger crisis in Somalia is because of the natural resources were destroyed by the civil war. Another reason is numerous amounts of drought and flooding. But one of the main reasons that Somalia is hungry is poverty. Their per capita GDP per year is $500. Since their natural resources were destroyed by the civil war, they can’t grow sufficient food. Management Style and Practices Essay

Why the management style and practices that had worked well in the past began to cause discontent within the workforce? United Parcel Service (UPS) has a strict and regulated system. The managers have already determined everything for his staffs. All the employees are ought to follow every single step that has arranged previously by their company. The employees are bound with rules and regulations that they couldn’t have their own pace in working. Thus, the employees are now feeling stress and complaint on their jobs. The drivers are always require to make countless runs during the day to deliver overnight letters since UPS has made a guarantee of 10.30 am delivery services for it. For instance, a morning run is made to deliver the overnight letter, while a later run is made to deliver the remaining parcels. UPS has also increase the parcel weight and improves the technology so that it will be able to cope with delivery services on larger parcel. During the early- to mid- 1990s, the drives have to be trained on how to use UPS’s sophisticated and technical parcel-tracing systems. Hence, the UPS drivers have to learn to deliver the new services and new systems that could performance a better workload and services for customers. But, this has driven the UPS drivers into a situation where they felt discontent with the new delivery services. Besides, the engineers have delegated a set of suitable tasks to different workers in order to maximize its performance on delivery services. This is to ensure that the workers will perform every task down to the most minutes detail. The UPS workers have an average of 80 working hours per week that could be says as they had turn out better than machines. Generally, these changes on the management style and practices have impacts on the UPS staffs. The workers were suffocated and discontent over the competition-induced changes which have brought some difficulties to them. A research has shown that UPS workers scored in the 91st percentile of U.S. workers for job stress, while many of them suffered from nervous tension, phobias, back strain or injuries. Jim Carey, who was a former UPS driver and also was the first Teamster general president, had set fire on the strike against UPS. Carey was supported by the vast majority of UPS Teamster as most of the people were dissent of â€Å"living to work† and wishes to have better life. Even though UPS offers highly competitive hourly wages, salaries and total compensation plans to both full time and part time workers compared to other competitive company, but most people are searching for living a better life, which include a healthy lifestyle. The employees in UPS seem to follow every rules and regulations. It is because they have no right to voice out their idea and opinion. Lower level managers are obviously feared of questioning to the senior managers. It shows that the vile based management style is starts at the top. It may counterproductive and impacts the worker’s ability to provide better services to their customers.

Detective Mark Fuhrman testified for the prosecution side that he was the first detective at the crime scene and he was the one to find the bloody glove. He testified at a preliminary hearing that he climbed the wall of O.J.s estate and found a bloody glove on a path. He identified them as Aris Lights, model number 70263. These are the same type of gloves Nicole bought Simpson in 1990. When Simpson was asked to put the gloves on in front of the jury the gloves appeared not to fit. The prosecution suggested the blood shrank the gloves.
